Septic tank maintenance is something that should be left to a professional, that’s something out of question. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways you can improve your septic system and prevent a few problems that it may cause when it’s full or too dirty.

However, let’s start from the beginning. When you install a septic tank in your property or house, you need to keep in mind that it needs to be cleaned and pumped occasionally. Every two or three years is a good amount of time.

Many people ignore this or decide to wait too many years until they finally contact someone to clean and pump it properly. If you have heard people complaining about their tanks being smelly or that they aren’t working properly, it is almost sure that happens because they haven’t maintain it correctly.

That being said, a septic tank should be cleaned every three to five years, and inspected and pumped every two or three.

Now, these are more like a general maintenance that you need to carry out not too often, which means you don’t have to worry too much about them until the time comes. However, there are a few ways to help your septic tank and system and they can probably allow you to carry out maintenance even in five years, which is the maximum time you can wait.

For example, using yeast for septic tanks is one of the best options nowadays. If you didn’t know, the septic tank helps to treat your water thanks to the bacteria that live there. When you use yeast, it allows and helps the bacteria to stay alive and it breaks down waste solids.

It sounds simple, but it is super useful and it isn’t expensive, which means you can buy some of it and add it periodically. You only have to flush half of a cup of yeast down the toilet and every four or five months, add another one.

This will make your septic system work perfectly all the time and cleaning and pumping can wait even more years, but don’t exceed the maximum time.
